The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in September and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
